Drought hits Rangamati, poor Boro production

The marginal farmers of the district are not satisfied with the poor production of Boro paddy due to severe drought to this year. Every year this farmers produce bumper production from Boro land and they attained food autarky. But this year, it will be very difficult for the marginal farmers to get one-third output than previous years despite massive Boro farming.

The farmers who cultivated paddy in the low lying land are not getting paddy in current season as their paddy fields were affected by drought. Around 25,000 acres of land have been brought under Boro cultivation through out the district this year, the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said. The target was fixed at 24,823 MT of paddy in the district.

Two-third of the arable are low lying and only one third is high where most of the farmers cultivate paddy. The farmers cultivate BR-1, BR-3, BR-28, BR-29, and hybrid as these types of seeds produce bumper production. The DAE sources said.

About two millions farmers across the district usually use to cultivate Boro when the lake water begins to fall from the beginning of January and they harvest paddy in May each year.
They get bumper production but their efforts went in vain as their paddy fields have been affected by drought this session. Betchari, Hazachara, Myschari, Rupban, Mitingyachari, Dhamaichara, Indramachara, Shukurchari, Naraichari of Barkal upazila soil of the paddy fields developed cracks. The plants did not grow and are drying.
Kheddermar, Ghulshakhali, Dighalchari, Sijak Marichhya, Ugalchari and Battala of Baghaichari, Chotpatighat, Zakhha Bazar of Zurachari, Dighalchari, Dhupshil of Bilaichari face the same situation.

Ranjan Kumar Chakma, a 46-year-old marginal farmer of village Rupban under under Subolong union added that he cultivated Boro paddy on seven acres of land but he did not get any crop this year as long drought damaged the paddy. He got 135 mounds of paddy from paddy field last year, but this year is no output.
